Consensus Reference Materials for DOC and TDN Analysis

The University of Miami BIF Lab provides Consensus Reference Materials (CRMs) for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) analyses. These materials allow laboratories to reference their measurements against the broader domestic and international DOC analytical community.

The CRM program was previously led by Professor Dennis Hansell and has been led by Professor Mariana Bif since 2025.

About the CRM Program

The DOC-CRM program supports high-quality, comparable measurements of dissolved organic carbon across laboratories worldwide. CRMs are intended for routine use during analytical runs and provide a shared reference point for the DOC and TDN community.

The program has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and is currently funded through 2028.

Available Reference Materials

CRMs are acidified with hydrochloric acid and tested for stability. Consensus DOC and TDN values for each batch are provided in the consensus values table. The low carbon water (LCW) is prepared using water from our Milli-Q® Advantage A10 System.

Replacement empty boxes are available for $156 for 40 mL vials and $122 for 20 mL vials. We encourage users to reuse empty vials when possible.

DOC-TN Determination Kit

DOC-TN Determination Kits include the materials needed to run DOC and TN analyses, including carbon and nitrogen standards, reference materials, and a spreadsheet template for organizing standards, CRMs, and samples.

The 20 mL DOC-TN kit contains 3 complete kits per box. The 40 mL DOC-TN kit contains 9 complete kits per box.

Storage and Handling

CRMs are sensitive to heat and light.

Please store CRMs in the dark and refrigerated, ideally between 4–7°C. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat during storage or shipping.
